Measure the opening and the tightest door on the way in. We check popular fridges against the makers' own sizes and clearances, and tell you which ones fit.

The opening

Cabinet to cabinet, or cabinet to wall. 36 in is the most common.

Doors off

Taking the doors off is normal. Most delivery crews will do it, but ask when you book. Some charge extra.

Measuring

Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest. Old floors and cabinets are rarely square.

Water line

An ice maker needs a water line. A braided stainless line is the one to get. It won't split like the plastic ones.

How we work it out

Most fridges that don't fit fail one of four checks. We run them in this order.

Getting it in the house. A fridge goes through a door upright, on its narrow side. We want 1 in to spare for hands and the dolly. If it only clears with the doors and handles off, we say so.

The opening. Makers want air around the case so the compressor can shed heat. Most ask for ⅜ in on each side and on top, and 1 to 2 in behind. We use each maker's number, and the height to the top of the door hinges, since that's the tallest point.

fridge width + 2 × side gap ≤ opening width

The doors. Next to a wall, the door has to swing past the case to get to 90°. If it can't, the crisper drawers won't come out. When the spec sheet doesn't list a width with the doors open, we use 3¾ in.

Sticking out. A full-depth fridge sits 6 to 9 in past a standard counter. Counter-depth models sit 1 to 3 in past. That's not a no, but you should know before it shows up.
