Will your cabinets fill the wall?

Measure the wall, then list the cabinet boxes and appliance spaces. You'll see the gap left over and how to fill it.

These are example numbers. Put in yours.

The wall

in

Wall to wall, at the narrowest point.

What is at the ends?

Your cabinet boxes

in

Stock widths go 9, 12, 15 and up by 3 to 36 in.

30 in is standard.

in

24 in is standard, 18 in compact.

36 in for most full-size fridges.

A filler covers it. Put 1⅝ in at each end.

boxes = 15 + 36 + 18 + 12 = 81 in

appliances = range 30 + dishwasher 24 = 54 in

gap = 138¼ in wall − 135 in = 3¼ in

needed at the wall = 2 × ½ in = 1 in minimum, 6 in maximum

Filler

Split it, 1⅝ in at each wall. Rip a 3 in filler to width and scribe it to the wall.

Measure

Measure the wall at the floor, at counter height and at the top of the uppers. Use the smallest.

Appliance spaces

Don't steal filler from appliance spaces. A 24 in dishwasher wants the full 24 in, and a 30 in range wants 30.

Corners

Where two runs meet in a corner, plan a 3 in filler on each side so drawers and handles clear each other.

How we work it out

Add up the boxes and the appliance spaces. Take that off the wall length. What's left is your filler.

gap = wall − (boxes + range + dishwasher + fridge)

good gap = ½ in per wall end, up to 6 in

Fillers come 3 in and 6 in wide, and you rip them down to fit. Leave at least ½ in at each wall so you can scribe to it and doors clear. Past 6 in, a filler looks like a mistake. Add a 9 in box or swap one box for the next stock size.

Stock boxes go from 9 to 36 in in 3 in steps. Measure the wall at the floor, the counter and the top, and use the smallest number.
