Standard stove size

Sizes from the makers' spec pages. Check the sheet for the exact model before you cut anything.

Short answer

A standard stove is 30 in wide. The range itself measures just under that, 29⅞ in on the GE we checked, so it slides into a 30 in gap. A freestanding one is 47 in tall to the top of the backguard and 28 in deep with the handle.

How wide is a stove?

Stoves come in 24, 30, 36 and 48 in widths. 30 in is the standard, and 3 of the ranges above are that size. A 24 in range is for small kitchens and apartments. 36 and 48 in are pro-style, like the Wolf, at 35⅞ in and wider.

How deep is a stove?

Counters are 24 in deep, and no range we checked sits flush with them. The GE freestanding is 28 in with the handle, so it sticks out about 4 in past the cabinet boxes. The slide-in is 28¼ in. The Wolf runs 29½ in.

Freestanding or slide-in

A freestanding range has finished sides and a tall backguard with the controls on it. A slide-in has its controls up front and no backguard, so it's only 37¼ in tall and the counter and backsplash run right up behind it. Both fit the same 30 in opening.

What you need above and around it

GE wants 30 in from the cooktop to the bottom of an unprotected cabinet above it, or 24 in if the cabinet bottom is covered with the fire-rated board and sheet metal the guide spells out. Cabinets over the cooktop can't be deeper than 13 in. The install guide requires an anti-tip bracket. Put it in.

Going over the stove with a hood? The range hood sizer works out the CFM and width. Swapping to induction? Check the induction panel calculator first, since most need a 40 or 50 amp circuit.
