Counter-depth refrigerator dimensions

From the makers' spec sheets for the 40 fridges we check.

Short answer

Counter-depth fridges run 26¼ to 29⅝ in deep without handles. A regular full-depth fridge runs 30½ to 35⅝ in. In a standard counter run, counter-depth still sits 2½ to 6¼ in past the counter front once you leave the gap behind it.

Counter-depth vs full-depth

Width31¼ to 36 in28 to 36 in
Height to the hinges69⅛ to 72 in65⅞ to 70¼ in
Depth, no handles26¼ to 29⅝ in30½ to 35⅝ in

Past the counter is from a 25½ in counter front, with each maker's back gap, doors closed, handles not counted.

What counter-depth means

It means the case is about as deep as your cabinets. It doesn't mean the fridge sits flush. The doors hang in front of the case, the handles stick out past that, and the maker wants an inch or two of air behind it. Add those up and you get the few inches past the counter in the table.

If you want it dead flush, that's a built-in fridge. Those sit inside the cabinets and cost a lot more.

What you give up

Room inside. The counter-depth fridges we check average 20.5 cu ft. The full-depth ones average 25.3 cu ft. Same width, just shallower, so the shelves are shorter front to back.

How to measure your depth

Measure from the wall behind the fridge to the front edge of the countertop. Most kitchens land at 25 to 25½ in. Take off the maker's back gap, usually 1 to 2 in, and that's the case depth that lines up with your counter.

Watch for a water line, outlet or baseboard on the back wall. Any of those pushes the fridge forward. Measure from whatever sticks out the most.
