room = 14 × 12 ft = 168 sq ft
with waste = 168 × 1.1 = 184.8 sq ft (10% for a straight lay)
one tile = 12 × 24 in ÷ 144 = 2 sq ft
tiles = 184.8 ÷ 2 = 93
boxes = 184.8 ÷ 16 = 12
At 24 in, this is large-format tile. Set it in large-format thinset, and check the floor is flat: big tile shows every dip.
We used 16 sq ft a box as a placeholder. Box sizes vary by brand, so put in the number off the label.
Keep a box of spares. Dye lots change, and a cracked tile is hard to match later.
How we work it out
sq ft = length × width (plus the second part of an L-shaped room)
to buy = sq ft × 1.10, or × 1.15 for diagonal and herringbone
Then we divide by the size of one tile for the count, and by the box coverage for boxes. Box sizes vary by brand, so put in the number off the label. Tile 15 in or longer on a side is large format: it wants large-format thinset and a flat floor.
